After watching the Saskatchewan Roughriders recent offensive performance against the Calgary Stampeders, Rider Nation is livid that the Green and White refused to even attempt a deep pass in the game. Clearly, their game plan was to control the football and not risk turnovers. But their offensive strategy went beyond that – it was more conservative than Stephen Harper!
We’ll leave the pigskin analysis (and questionable political jokes) to the experts, but believe it or not, the Riders’ last game does help me explain something about monuments. The importance of going deep!
In order to ensure long-term legibility, different colours of granite need to be sandblasted to different depths, using different techniques. I don’t want to get too technical about it, but generally speaking, lighter colours need to be engraved deeper than darker colours.
Dark colours, like the black granite memorial above, have excellent natural contrast and do not need to be engraved very deep to ensure legibility.
Lighter colours, like the pink granite memorial above, must be engraved deep into frosted panels to ensure legibility.
The important thing to remember when shopping for a monument is to ask questions and make sure you are comfortable that you are dealing with an experienced expert you trust to know what they are doing. After all, monuments can cost thousands of dollars, so it is critically important that the granite is carved right the first time to avoid expensive repairs in the future.
So, whether you are Roughriders Offensive Coordinator Stephen McAdoo or Frontier Monuments’ Memorial Counselor Adam Reeson, it is important to know the right time to Go Deep!
