Ah, the Great White North. The land of polite manners, hockey and… uh… Justin Bieber.
We are humble people by nature and rarely like to brag about all that we have to offer. Generally, this is an admirable trait. However, sometimes this can result in the rest of the world and frankly ourselves taking Canada for ‘granite’.
Bad puns aside, as COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc on the Canadian economy, it is critically important that we support each other and when possible, shop local to support local jobs. In the cemetery headstone industry, that means encouraging our customers to consider a Canadian-quarried stone for their tombstone or grave marker.
So, as we celebrate Canada Day on July 1, I wanted to take the opportunity to salute a few of the quality monument-grade granites that are quarried north of the 49th Parallel.
Canadian Mahogany Granite – Ontario
This medium-grained, rich brown granite is my personal favourite Canadian stone to work with. A great option for families who would like a darker colour, but still want to support the Canadian granite industry.
Laurentian Green Granite- Quebec
In Saskatchewan, Green is the colour, football is the game. Elsewhere across Canada, green is often the colour of headstones using this natural jade coloured and distinctive grained stone.
Laurentian Pink Granite – Quebec
This fine-grained stone is well-known across the monument industry as one of the best quality pink granites in the world. With very good contrast between polished and un-polished surfaces and its natural deep-rose colour, this granite is ideal for shape carved floral designs.
Mountain Rose Granite – Ontario
This pinkish granite achieves a bright rose hued finish when polished. Quarried in Vermilion Bay, Ontario, Mountain Rose is one of the top selling Canadian granites because of its natural colour and affordable price.
Stanstead Grey Granite – Quebec
Just like Meghan Trainor, this stone is “all about the base”. Quarried right in the “granite capital of Canada”, Stanstead Quebec, this medium and course grained stone is a popular choice for monument bases, foundations and construction projects. When steeled (smooth, not polished finish) this light to medium grey granite creates some very nice headstones too.
With so many excellent Canadian granites to choose from, the only question is…
“which will you choose, eh”?
